Winter Driving Tips

Winter in Ontario can be harsh, with icy roads, heavy snowfall, and freezing temperatures that challenge both drivers and their vehicles.

Preparing your car for the season not only ensures safety but also helps avoid costly repairs.

Here’s a checklist to get your car winter-ready:

1. Switch to Winter Tires.

Winter tires provide better traction in snow and icy conditions. Their rubber compound stays flexible in cold temperatures, allowing them to grip the road more effectively than all-season tires.

2. Check Your Battery.

Cold weather can reduce a battery’s power. Have your battery tested to ensure it’s in good condition. If it’s older than three to five years, consider replacing it to avoid unexpected breakdowns.

3. Top Off Fluids.

Ensure your windshield washer fluid is rated for -40°C or colder to prevent it from freezing. Also, check your antifreeze levels to keep the engine from freezing, and make sure your oil is suited for winter conditions.

4. Inspect Brakes and Lights.

Brakes are crucial during winter driving. Ensure they’re functioning properly and that brake pads are in good shape. Also, check all exterior lights, including headlights and brake lights, to ensure visibility during snowstorms or fog.

5. Keep an Emergency Kit.

Winter emergencies can happen. Keep a kit in your car with essential items such as a blanket, first aid supplies, flashlight, extra gloves, and a shovel. It’s also wise to include jumper cables, an ice scraper, and some non-perishable snacks.

6. Protect Your Wipers.

Snow and ice can wear down your wiper blades quickly. Consider switching to winter wiper blades that are more durable and can handle snow buildup. Always clear off your windows, roof, and mirrors to maintain visibility.

7. Monitor Tire Pressure.

Tire pressure drops as temperatures fall, so regularly check and maintain it at the recommended level. Properly inflated tires ensure optimal contact with the road, improving traction and handling.

By taking these steps, you’ll be better prepared for Ontario’s winter driving conditions, ensuring a safer and smoother ride throughout the season.
